Casey is .....

2009 Times-News Baseball Athlete of the Year.

Pivotal player
Super sophomore Christiansen a pivotal player in Minico's title run
Minico's seniors very well did their part in leading the Spartans to the Class 4A state baseball championship this season.

Chris Joyce made SportsCenter-worthy diving grabs in center field and batted .452. Second baseman Barak Frank scored 35 runs and made turning double plays seem routine. Shortstop Landon Barnes hit .435 and stole 18 bases. Catcher Alex Moon took charge behind the plate and also tallied 35 RBIs.

However, Minico's seniors agree that their season wouldn't have been as successful without the help of a sensational sophomore. Casey Christiansen is the 2009 Times-News Baseball Athlete of the Year.

"He's just a stud," said Barnes. "He's grown up loving baseball. He's from a baseball family and he always wants the ball in big games. He's a lot more mature on the baseball field than a sophomore would usually be."

But Christiansen's first full season as a varsity pitcher had bumps in the road early as he lost his first four starts.

"I struggled at the beginning of the year and I was disappointed in myself, mainly because we weren't winning," Christiansen said. "I think I learned from it what it took to become a quality pitcher. Later in the year we started winning and the whole team grew into their roles."

As the season progressed, Christiansen became more confident and consistent. As he improved, so did the Spartans. He finished the season with six consecutive wins, including a pair of shutouts against Jerome, the second-place team in the Great Basin West. He led the team with a 2.18 ERA and registered 70 strikeouts while allowing just 11 walks. Christiansen capped his remarkable year by tossing eight shutout innings at the state tournament.

"He's one of those guys you love rolling out because he gives you a chance to win every single time," said Minico coach Ben Frank. "For a sophomore, he's got beyond a senior's mentality. He's been our anchor on the pitching staff."

What's more, Christiansen was equally impressive at the plate, batting .413 and ranking third on the team with 33 RBIs. When he wasn't pitching, he provided a solid glove at third base and shortstop.

"We told him if he's going to play on varsity he's got to really step his game up," Moon said. "We don't treat him like a sophomore. We expect him to play like a senior and I think that helps him with his mentality. We expect a lot out of him and he knows it. He stepped up his game really well this year."

As Minico's catcher, Moon has caught several quality pitchers the past three years. He ranks Christiansen among the best.

"Coming from (2008), we had Dane (Broadhead), R.J. (Salvi), Cody (Winmill). And Casey comes in and has just as good of stuff, if not better, than all those guys," Moon said. "As a sophomore he comes in and deals like that, that's impressive."

Happy Graduation!

Last night was Minico's graduation so we went to support Kegan! It was one of the best graduations I've been to ... it was fast! The speakers all gave good, but quick talks and we were out of there before 7!

Proud Mom and Grandma

Jackobi did really good and just played with her cousins Dylan and Cassie the entire time! Luckily we were in the grassy area so they could just play in the grass!

Congrats on your graduation Kegan! Good luck at college!

Jason's Birthday!

Happy Birthday Jason!! Jason's birthday was on Wednesday ... since it was in the middle of the week we hitched a ride with Nate's parents to Pocatello to celebrate his birthday with him! We had yummy dinner at Chili's and even though I'm pretty sure Jackobi was punishing me for leaving her overnight (she was a BEAR for sure!!) it was great!! We headed to his house for presents and cake after that ... where Jack.s gave Jason his raccoon that he used to terrify her with back. It had been safely hidden by Grandma for many months! She hugged it most of the night, so I guess that means she's not afraid of it anymore.

We had a good night and were glad we could come celebrate Jason's old age with him.

Happy Birthday Jason! We hope your day was great!

The Taylor Swift concert was on Tuesday! So Jamie, Codie, Candice and I packed in the car and headed to SLC! We had a fun trip ... yummy Panda Express ... shopped ... learned random facts from Codie and had a blast!

The concert was SO good! I wasn't sure if she would put on a very good show being so young and her first headlining tour -- but she was awesome!

Gloriana was one of the concert's opening acts. They're pretty good! I've heard one of their songs on CMT -- and they were even better live! Kelly Pickler was the other opening act, but she was sick -- darn it!

Hmmm.... the things people do for tickets ....

She came out and sang in the crown for a couple of songs ... pretty cool huh! Too bad we were across the stadium from lucky section K!! It was cute, on her way down she hugged all the little kids, they were so excited!

Singing in pouring rain

After the concert we went out of the Energy Solutions building and were able to see her ride out on her tour bus ... lucky us!

I'm glad Jamie got us all tickets to the concert! Her husband was so nice and booked us a hotel rooms a block away too! It was the first time I have left Jackobi overnight and it was surprisingly much easier than I thought! (I just left her with Nate though ... so she was in good hands!!) Thanks again for the tickets Jamie! I had a blast!

Happy 30th Camille!

Happy birthday Camille! Sorry we're not there (or you're not here) to celebrate with you!
Thanks for sitting on Nate all those years and beating him up ... you made my husband tough! (or afraid of girls, I haven't decided yet!)

Anyways, we hope you've had a fantastic birthday!

Brooklyn's Birthday

Britini's little girl Brooklyn turned ONE year old! So Sara and I packed our girls up and headed to Poky for her FIRST birthday party!! It was the first really nice day -- worked out perfect since her party was at the park!!

I can tell Jackobi and Emaiya are going to be good friends already!! They're so cute together and even though Mya is 4 and Jacks is only one ... they play SO GOOD together!

Happy birthday Brook! We had fun at your first birthday party! We're glad we could go see her and Brittini for the day!

JoEllyn's Birthday

Nate's mom celebrated a birthday this week and as you can see, got not one, but TWO birthday cakes! Yum!! We sure enjoyed the extra she sent home with us! :)

Hmmm... how many Christiansen's does it take to light a birthday candle .... looks like 5!!

We had a really good time celebrating JoEllyn's birthday and were once again reminded why we love living so close to both of our families! I'm pretty sure I have the greatest in-laws ever ... you always hear horror stories about how rotten the dreaded 'mother-in-law' can be, but I must have lucked out! JoEllyn is great -- she is so supportive of Nate and I and is a great Grandma to Jackobi! I feel really blessed to have married into the Christiansen family!

This picture was too funny not to post ... one of Jackobi's favorite things to do right now is climb on people ... she was standing on Bubba's stomach dancing ... too funny! (don't mind the 1/2 naked child! I don't know what it is about it, but she sure is happier without clothes on!)

Congrats Brody and Becky!!

My sweet Becky and her boyfriend have decided to make it official and are ENGAGED!! I couldn't be happier for them!! Brod makes Becky SO happy and she deserves the best!! I love you Beck and am so excited for you!!

Reverse the Curse ....

Well, baseball players are EXTREMELY superstitious. Every time one of his brothers has gone to the State baseball tournament, Nate has talked about the 'Christiansen Curse' ... which basically is a curse to never win State ... starting back with his Uncle Bruce (we won't say what year ... you can thank us later Bruce! :) ) Well ... I'm HAPPY to report that the curse has been broken!! That's right! Casey and the Minico Spartans won the 2009 4A State Baseball Championship this year! It didn't even seem like a challenge ... the final score was a dominating 11-1, five-inning victory. Casey struck the final batter out and Nate said he didn't think the season could end in a better fashion! The Idaho Statesman put it well:

4A: MINICO TOPPLES MOSCOW

The Spartans continued their dominance with an 11-1 victory over the Bears in the state championship game Saturday at Bishop Kelly High. Minico (22-11) won its three tournament games by a combined score of 28-3.

Congratulations on an awesome season Casey!

Graduation BBQ & Hogle Zoo

Since David graduated from UNLV with his Masters they decided to have a graduation party for him in SLC so all his friends and family from back home could celebrate with him. Justin, Anna, mom, Jackobi and were able to head down for the day too!

Look at our good BBQ'ing skills! Okay, really my mom did most of the work, but we made a good effort to help! Who knew BBQ'ing would be so much work!?

There was a great playground right next to where we had the party. The girls loved playing on the merry-go-round (there's not one at our local park anymore!) It was funny to watch them try and catch their balance as it went round and round.

Since we were in SLC already, we decided to hit up the Hogle zoo and see how the girls liked their first taste of the zoo!! Jackobi absolutely LOVED it! She was oohh-ing and pointing the entire time!

Her favorite by far were the elephants! They were feeding them so they were moving around and really active. She loved them! (and the monkeys too!)

However, none of the animals could compare to her excitement for the giant bags of popcorn ... it was really yummy!

Last time Sara got to watch Jackobi she introduced her to caffeinated soda and peanut butter m&m's ... this time is was flavored Lip Smackers .... you can tell by her grin she liked it!

And what would a trip to the Hogle zoo be without drinking from the lion's head fountain?? I was surprised it didn't freak Jackobi out, but she loved it!!

All in all, we had a great trip to SLC -- it was so good to see David and Sara!

Pools are for Fools ....

Jackobi prefers sun-bathing ... too bad the pool was indoors!

Well, while we were in Boise for State baseball we ventured to the pool to see if Jackobi had decided she changed her mind. The answer was most defiantly NO ... don't let the picture below fool you, she may look like she was having fun, but let me assure -- she was not!

Nate and Bubba tried to convince her that it would be fun, but she actually rather enjoyed just playing on the chairs!

I guess better luck next hotel stay! Maybe she'll like it better once she understands what the pool is! For now we'll stick to her outdoor kiddie pool. She actually loves the water (especially the hose!) I'm so glad it's summertime!

State Tourny - Game 2

Minico faced Hillcrest in the State Semi-Finals game and won 12-2. They are playing so great -- it's awesome to watch! They'll play in the Championship game tomorrow v. Moscow. Hopefully they can keep it up!!

A little extra pop in their step after winning in only 5 innings ... I sure do like the 10-run rule (especially when it's in our favor!)

I think it's pretty cute, the one thing that Jackobi pretty well demands after baseball games is that her Uncle Casey holds her. I think she thinks it's pretty cool to watch him out on the field during the game!

My friend Sara lives in Boise and was able to come and watch the game with us! Having other little kids around sure makes it easier to keep Jackobi entertained!! Sara brought Emaiya and her nephew Syler. They had fun playing together!

State Baseball Tourny - Game 1

Minico played Nampa the first game of this year's State baseball tournament. Casey pitched the complete game and threw a 'gem' as the newspaper called it! He did great and Minico won 5-0.

I'm pretty sure I got 'the look' from Casey when I took this picture ... but I couldn't resist! He had not one, but two reporters waiting to talk to him after the game. Look out paparazzi!

It was such a great night and PERFECT baseball weather! It's nice to be able to sit and watch some baseball without having to freeze to do it!

Jackobi sure likes it when Aunt Camille is home -- she gets the endless attention she likes! She even gets to play with her cool sunglasses, get snazzy painted toe nails and all sorts of fun stuff!
